Redateljica Fennell smatra da su Orkanski visovi ljubavna priča, iako se radi o šokantnom, okrutnom i narativno neobičnom tekstu. “U knjizi ima mnogo sadomazohizma. Nisu ljudi bez razloga bili šokirani kada je izašla”. Fennell je u svojoj adaptaciji uvela određene promjene, ali je odlučila zadržati izvorni dijalog Emily Brontë u najvećoj mogućoj mjeri.
