Američki znanstvenici razvili su biorazgradivi “živi” materijal u kojem kvasac (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) sudjeluje u razgradnji plastike. Polimer nastaje spajanjem sintetskog PEGDA-a i prirodnog proteina BSA, uz ugrađene genski modificirane kvaščeve gljivice. Njihovo djelovanje kontrolira se bakrovim ionima, koji inhibiraju razgradnju, i galaktozom, koja je pokreće. Materijal je stabilan tijekom uporabe, a po potrebi se potpuno razgradi, ostavljajući sirovine za novu proizvodnju. Nenad Raos za Bug
